Transgender Day of Remembrance is an evening when our community comes together to honor the transgender family taken from us this year. Join the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center of MSU, other campus stakeholders as well as community organizations to observe Transgender Day of Remembrance. We will gather under the pavilion at Wenonah Park in Bay City at 6:00 p.m. Please join Great Lakes Bay Pride's Transgender Support Group for a vigil honoring members of the community lost to violence because of their gender identity. There will be a link provided for live streaming later this week on our event calendar. All those who attend in person must be masked and vaccinated. The ceremony will be from 11:05 - 11:45 am. The ceremony will take place at Stetson Chapel on the campus of Kalamazoo College. OutFront will partner with Kalamazoo College Office of Relious and Spiritual Life on November 19th to read the names of those who have been affected by anti-trans violence. Accessibility note: Happenings is fully wheelchair accessible, and an ASL interpreter will be at the event. Transgender Day of Remembrance 2021 is being cohosted by the Center for Gender and Sexuality, the Intercultural Center, PRIDE, and Wellness Services. This event will feature five local trans community members who will share their stories, in addition to remembering the trans community members that we have lost this year. Transgender Michigan is encouraging and assisting in Day of Remembrance observances throughout the state. Transgender Michigan advocates and educates against transgender violence and discrimination. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who've died by anti-transgender violence. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends, and lovers. Through the vigil, we express the love and respect for our people in the face of national indifferance and hatred. Day or Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. ![]() It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that the media doesn't perform. The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. Over the last decade, more that one person per mouth has died due to transgender based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. The deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Thank you to the individuals who have organized this event, we appreciate you dedication to advocating for and acknowledging the trans community in Niagara.The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.Īlthough not every person honored during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender, each was a victim of volence based on bais against transgender people. This free event will host a variety of speakers, music and giveaways. Please show support for the trans community, by attending the TDOR event taking place Wednesday November 20 th at 4-8pm at Third Space Café in Niagara Falls (4345 Queen Street). This day was started in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, transgender advocate, who held a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. Although society has become more aware, accepting and supportive of this diverse community since the inaugural TDOR event 20 years ago, we need to continue to work towards further inclusion and solidarity. This day not only commemorates those we have lost, but also draws necessary attention to the transphobia, discrimination and violence our trans community continues to face. November 20 th marks Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), an annual day of observation to honour the lives of transgender people who were lost due to acts of anti-transgender violence. ![]()
